Here’s a fun and easy Egg Basket game you can quickly set up for your young kids this spring.
Make sure you watch the cute reel on my Instagram too! I can’t get enough of that Bunny song!
The egg basket game is suitable for all ages
This activity is can be adjusted to suit ages 6 months up to 6 years (or more)! I set it up slightly differently for both J (3y) and W (6m) and they both absolutely loved it.
All you need for this game is a laundry basket, yarn, and a handful of plastic Easter eggs. You can add a bag of colorful shred, but it’s entirely optional.
The Egg Basket Game
To set this up, you will have to thread a long piece of yarn through the holes of your laundry basket to create a web of yarn crisscrossing all over the opening into the basket. Then dump in your eggs and have your child navigate the yarns to retrieve the eggs.
For Babies
To set it up for babies (old enough to support themselves sitting), you will have to weave your yarn somewhat low down in the basket and leave a space in the yarn where you can sit your baby into the basket. Your baby will sit, facing into the strings, and have to reach in and around them to grab the eggs.
W had such strong determination at this! It was perfect for her to practice fine motor skills and focus on individual objects.
Do not use a filler or paper shred with babies as it is a choking hazard.
Do not leave Baby unattended in the basket. Ensure that the basket will not tip over with Baby inside.
Ages 1-3
For toddlers, you can add more strings of yarn, and higher up, than with babies. Crisscross them even more to increase the challenge.
Add to the game with a bag of Easter Basket filler, this makes it more visually fun but also gives the child another obstacle to navigate.
J really enjoyed having a small basket on hand to put the successfully retrieved egg into.
Ages 3-6
For slightly older children you can provide a large mixing spoon, ladle, or tongs as tools to gather the eggs with.
I tried this with J and she found it just slightly too challenging at the time. I think just a little bit older (or even in a more determined mood), and she would love this.
Another thing you could try (we have not yet) is to blindfold them! If you do try that, please let me know how it goes! I would love to hear!
Final thoughts
The girls both loved this egg basket game and I’m already looking forward to doing it next year with increased challenges for both of them! It was a great activity to keep them busy for an afternoon.
