February is here! and with that, let’s make some Valentine’s Day decor! The kids and I made these painted conversation hearts. They were quick and easy to do, a perfect mommy and me craft.

It’s a bit of a nod to last year’s painted hearts when we did our Baby’s first art project! But it’s not nearly as mess-free haha!

These wooden hanging hearts are from the Dollar Tree! I know, SCORE! Conversation hearts are one of my absolute favorite candies, I get excited for them every year. So when I saw these hearts I knew exactly what we had to make!

Other than the hearts themselves, all we used were some acrylic paints and brushes.

I did lay a big piece of cardboard over the table (acrylics and small children is a scary combo!), and I grabbed some of my styrofoam trays to put the paints on. I always save and wash these trays from meat packaging, they are the best paint palettes!

Choosing Colors.

I let the girls each choose a color for their heart and then I chose a complimentary color for them each to swirl around with it. I wanted them to feel in charge, but I also wanted the hearts to come out cute!

J (4) chose purple, I gave her a light pink to go with it. And W (1.5) chose orange and we mixed yellow with it.

Painting the hearts

I set the girls up with smocks and a table cover, each with their own paint tray, and let them go to town! W got tired of painting after a few minutes, so I helped with hers, but J finished the purple one entirely on her own!

We set them aside to dry for a while, then, while the girls were otherwise entertained, I sat and did the lettering with some white paint and a small square-edged brush. The purple one reads, “BE MINE” and the orange says, “HUGS.”

Painting the words was by far the most time-consuming part. it wasn’t necessarily hard, but it took about 3 coats of white paint to thoroughly cover the colored background and I was painting slowly to make sure the edges were crisp.

If you have access to a Cricut or other type of cutting tool, I would absolutely take advantage of that and either glue or stick the letters on. heck, even large letter stickers would do the trick. But as we know, I’m a huge promoter of use what we have on hand and I had white paint.

End result

And that’s okay because I LOVE them! I think they came out so cute and I adore how they look hung on the wall. The girls recognize that their artwork is displayed in the house, and I get to enjoy the result of working together.

I would highly recommend that you make your own painted conversation hearts with your kids. Memories. Keepsakes. Seasonal Decor. It’s all there, and I know these will be hung up year after year.
