4th of July Noisemakers Craft

June 29, 2022

With Independence Day just around the corner, these 4th of July noisemakers are the perfect craft to share with your family!

Make these patriotic noisemakers for your kids to shake in the parade or to wave around at fireworks.

I’m going to be straightforward with you here: I made these for my toddler to play with, it’s not really a toddler craft. You can absolutely let your young kiddos help decorate them, but it’s really a craft for older children or for you to make for them.

It’s not just a craft that you can set up and have them do themselves like the fireworks painting activity I posted.

With that said, let’s get started.

Materials needed

  • Toilet paper tubes
  • Glue (I used hot glue and a basic craft glue stick)
  • Dry beans, corn, or some other noisy filler
  • Long skewers or skinny dowels
  • Construction Paper, paint, stickers, whatever you want to decorate it with.
  • Ribbons
  • Scrap cardboard

Please be careful if your children are helping with this! Hot Glue is just for mom!

Noisemaker Tutorial

1.

First step is to trace 2 circles onto your scrap cardboard. An empty Cereal box or that type of cardboard is perfect for this.

One circle will be the size of the toilet paper tube. Just trace the end of one, making it as circular as you can. The second circle will be about twice the size, I traced the bottom of a drinking glass. There’s no need for perfection here. Cut out both circles.

2.

Use a hot glue gun to attach the smaller circle to one end of your paper tube. It’s okay if it’s messy, just make sure the glue fills all the cracks and the circle is securely attached.

3.

When the glue is dry, stand it upright and add a handful of your noisemakers. I used popcorn (unpopped) but use whatever you have on hand. Dried beans, rice, lentils, pebbles, or even elbow noodles.

4.

Next up, cut a slit halfway through the larger circle and push one side over the other to create a cone. Glue together and then glue the cone onto the top of the tube, sealing the corn inside. Add extra glue to the underside to make sure it’s fully sealed and secure.

5.

Now use a nice thick strip of glue to attach the skewer or dowel. This will be the handle, so it has to be strong.

As you can see, I started decorating before I added the stick. I don’t think it makes much difference but I would actually suggest attaching the handle first.

6.

Now the fun part. DECORATE it!

I used construction paper to cover the entire tube and added extra decor on top of it. A rectangle cut 4″ X 5 1/2″ was the perfect size to cover the tubes I had.

I also added stickers and some shiny tinsel stars I had. Use whatever you like: glitter, paint, stickers, washi tape. The skies the limit.

This is where you can get your littles involved if you want to. You can absolutely give your child a tray of crafty things to decorate it or set up a paint station for them. I know my kiddo will jump at any opportunity to cover something with stickers!

7.

The very last thing I did was tie some red and blue ribbons to the handle along with some glue to hold them in place.
